Division Chief, Infectious Diseases & HIV Medicine
University Hospitals invites applications and nominations for the position of Division Chief, Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine.
Within the Department of Medicine, the Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine has built nationally respected programs in clinical care, research, and education. The Division provides leadership in the management of complex infections, HIV medicine, transplant- and immunocompromised-host care, and emerging infectious threats. After 10 years of distinguished leadership, Dr. Henry Boom is stepping down, and a national search is underway to recruit the next Division Chief, Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine. The Chief will report to Dr. Ighovwerha Ofotokun, Chair, Department of Medicine. In addition, the new Chief will hold a dual appointment as Chief at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, reinforcing the department’s deep academic roots and fostering collaboration across research and educational initiatives.
The next Division Chief of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine will build upon a strong foundation and articulate a bold vision for the Division’s future. This leader will expand access to highly specialized infectious disease care across UH’s growing regional footprint, driving measurable growth in clinical programs while ensuring the delivery of evidence-based, patient centered care. An accomplished clinician-scholar with a recognized expertise in infectious diseases, the Chief will strengthen the Division’s reputation as a trusted referral destination for complex infections, HIV medicine, transplant- and immunocompromised-host management, and emerging infectious threats. A respected scholar with a record of meaningful contributions to basic, translational, and/or clinical research, the Division Chief will further elevate the Division’s academic impact. This individual will foster a culture of inquiry and innovation, catalyzing advances that bridge discovery and bedside practice. By aligning research priorities with clinical strengths, the Chief will enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and expand opportunities for competitive funding, clinical trials, and increase the Division’s visibility nationally and internationally.
Critical to their success, the Chief will be a strategic and operationally astute leader who thinks system-wide across UH’s multi-hospital continuum. Partnering closely with departmental, hospital, and health system leadership, they will optimize clinical operations, strengthen care models, and ensure high-quality, coordinated infectious disease services across inpatient and ambulatory settings. As a unifying presence, the Chief will cultivate faculty development, educational excellence, and programmatic alignment — serving as a bridge between research and clinical care while advancing the Division’s mission within one of the nation’s leading academic health systems.
Qualified candidates are those who: hold a medical degree (MD, MD/PhD or equivalent). They will have a demonstrated track record of progressive leadership experience within a complex and dynamic academic health system and/or medical school and be eligible for faculty appointment at the Associate or Professor level at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Candidates must be board certified in Infectious Disease and eligible for licensure in the state of Ohio.
