Role Purpose
Responsible for supervision of the BJH main campus Sterile Processing Department (CSPD) and providing quality, efficient, cost-effective decontamination, sterilization, high level disinfection and distribution services with proper management of service utilization and inventory levels. Provides education and training support and oversees quality of all work. Able to problem solve equipment issues. Works as high functioning member of a team supporting clinics, procedural areas and over 65 operating rooms and clinics spread over a large campus. Over sees production of complex tray configurations for variety of services including ophthalmology, neurosurgery, ENT, trauma, transplant, cardiac, orthopedic, labor and delivery, fetal surgery, general surgery, minimally invasive and robotic cases and supports level 1 trauma center. Supervises a variety of functions which include decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of sterile surgical instrumentation and supplies. Supervises case cart build for "just in time" supply and instrumentation delivery to the operating rooms. Provides cleaning and sterilization support for research related and IRB approved instrumentation. Over sees all decontamination and high level disinfection for flexible endoscopes.
Responsibilities
Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
May participate in the development of departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets and having direct responsibility for adhering to those goals. This includes responding to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
Provides leadership and day-to-day support for operating rooms, clinics and procedural areas. Develops, communicates, and manages daily staffing schedules. Ensures daily assignments are made and completed and monitors all work to ensure 24/7 coverage of all departmental areas including scope reprocessing, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, case cart, sterile storage, and remote OR locations. Has oversight of daily production, staff productivity and distribution of case carts. The supervisory team supports daily production of over 900 trays and >50 HLD endoscopes in a fast paced, 24/7, academic, multispecialty, level 1 trauma facility. BJH CSPD services support over 430 transplant and >1000 robotic cases annually. Performs annual evaluations, coaching and discipline as needed.
Works with manager, educators and QA/QI to develop appropriate in-services and competencies for all staff. Oversees all daily operations and ensures that staff are meeting all compliance and quality requirements. Verifies staff competencies through direct observations. Oversees and audits daily equipment testing on all relevant equipment in CSPD as well as remote perioperative locations.
Daily responsibilities include assessment of instrument outages and developing action plan with leads and point of service personnel, communication with clinical staff on status of instrumentation requests, rounding in all areas to address areas of concern. Communicates with clinical staff on status of outages. Makes recommendations to improve instrument inventory to reduce future outages and assists with the procurement and coordination of equipment and instrumentation needed.
One-on-one meetings with leads and technicians on a regular basis to develop improvement/sustainment plan based around quality, productivity and ICARE Values. Appropriately coaches staff with performance concerns, completes any corrective or disciplinary action promptly and completes all performance evaluations and guides staff on how setting goals and improving performance. Tracks attendance and addresses issues promptly.
Keeps abreast of new developments, techniques and procedures on equipment, tests and methods as well as other information relating to sterile processing, and writes, updates, or reviews procedures as necessary. Has input into evaluation and selection of new technology and methodology that improves department performance and efficiency.
