Provide leadership and direction in design, development, and implementation of a comprehensive patient safety program and manage the core institutional resources devoted to improving safety and achieving our vision of mission zero and becoming the safest children's health system in FL and beyond.
This individual will have direct oversight and leadership of reliability culture improvement, harm prevention, cause analysis, responding to harm, developing improvement capability among Nemours associates as it relates to safety and close partnerships with our statewide care delivery sites, employee health, inclusion, diversity, equity and alignment as well as health and wellness. Position Responsibilities
- Directly responsible for systems designed to support harm reduction, event detection, event review and corrective action planning as well as proactive mitigation of potential errors.
- In collaboration with Nemours Children's Health FL operations and clinical leadership and Quality and Safety program leadership, participate in setting and implementing the annual strategic priorities to improve safety and eliminate preventable harm.
- Maintains and helps develop a culture of learning AKA learning organization and leverages high reliability principles.
- Partners with Director for Quality Improvement and Safety to ensure integration of information to prioritize improvement work as well as reporting to external networks where applicable.
- Responsible for along with enterprise risk and legal counterparts, the enterprise patient safety evaluation system (PSES).
- Key role in building a culture of proactive and reactive risk mitigation. Builds a culture of high reliability and reporting to detect near miss, precursor, serious safety events in addition to excellence and anticipation of risk.
- Maintains and leads a cause analysis program to include proactive and reactive tools, defines with DV counterparts the standard set of tools from which Nemours will work from.
- Contribute to local and enterprise strategic plans to improve safety, eliminate preventable harm, and build a culture of excellence.
- Collaborate with Risk Management to support consistent reporting of safety events, event analysis, and mitigation strategies in a way that fuels improvement and manages risks effectively.
- Collaborates with Risk Management in providing proactive risk mitigation strategies and responding to adverse events.
Position Requirements
Master's Degree in health-related field or MBA. This requirement can be offset with 5 of more years of experience in a similar role or if currently enrolled in a program and expect to obtain a degree within 2 years.
- Formal training in patient safety strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of hospital practices and protocols as well as applicable regulations and guidelines
- Demonstrated interest and track record of participation (and preferably leadership) in patient safety in a complex academic medical center
- Minimum of 5 years healthcare experience required
- Minimum of 3 years of healthcare leadership experience, either in quality or safety or clinical management required
- Experience in leading Patient Safety programs at the local or institutional level
- Certification as a certified professional in patient safety (eg CPPS) preferred
