The Vanderbilt University Medical Center Executive office is looking for a Sr. Director of Health Information Management. The Sr. Director of Health Information Management provides strategic leadership and operational direction for Health Information Management across Vanderbilt Health hospitals and clinics in its efforts to enhance the quality and safety of patient care by maintaining health information that adheres to industry best practices; ensures compliance with applicable regulations; supports timely revenue cycle operations; maintains the highest levels of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of patient information; and supports efficient and effective patient care, research, and education. The Sr. Director Health Information Management provides leadership and guidance on regulatory issues related to documentation and interoperability of patient information and develops and maintains information management policies and standards that protect the integrity of the health records and ensures compliance with those requirements.
The Sr. Director of Health Information Management provides leadership in support of Electronic Health Information Exchange to achieve the goals for effective clinical integration and patient access and interoperability. The Sr. Director of Health Information Management directs the development and delivery of policies, standards, processes, and programs that build and strengthen the quality of clinical documentation and the integrity of the electronic medical records to support high quality patient care, accurate coding, quality improvement initiatives, patient safety measures, external reporting metrics, and billing. The Sr. Director of Health Information Management administers the contracts and relationship with the vendors/contractors used to support transcription, release of information, records management, and storage for all HIM departments/services of Vanderbilt Health. The Sr. Director of Health Information Management supports the educational and research missions of VUMC by supporting the integration of documentation standards and best practices for comprehensive, accurate clinical documentation into the training programs for house staff, students, and key research personnel..

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Designs HIM functions for best practice service delivery while leveraging technology and vendor solutions to deliver high performing functions that are cost efficient.
Analyzes and evaluates data to better improve procedures, systems and set standards for improvement. Keeps abreast of health care industry trends and provides feedback regarding opportunities for growth and performance improvement.
Provide leadership and direction for key information management functions including record analysis and deficiency tracking; birth certificate processing and reporting; medical record chart corrections; scanning and indexing; release of medical information; and medical record storage, retrieval, and destruction.
Provide strategic leadership and direction for the medical record forms (paper and electronic) control processes; including the naming convention used in the electronic medical record and the forms committees of the Health Record Executive Committee.
Plans, implements, and monitors quality and production of department functions to best support patient care and hospital needs.
Creates the strategic direction for HIM across the health system with an approach centered on maintaining and improving accuracy and efficiency.
Designs HIM function for best practice service delivery while leveraging technology and vendor solutions to deliver high performing functions that are cost efficient.
Analyzes and evaluates data to better improve procedures, systems and set standards for improvement. Keeps abreast of health care industry trends and provides feedback regarding opportunities for growth and performance improvement.
Plans, implements, and monitors quality and production of department functions to best support patient care and hospital needs.
Participates in the drafting and final approval processes for HIM policies and procedures.
Plays an active role in setting standards and evaluating performance of HIM operations across all entities to ensure that quality and productivity standards are being met.
Communicates with other directors to establish accountability and coordination between HIM and the other VUMC Revenue Cycle departments/operations.
In coordination with the VUMC Office of Compliance, ensures that all current HIM operations are in accordance with relevant regulations and standards (such as HIPAA)
Collaborates with the director of HIM, physicians, compliance officers, and other departments to promote optimal efficiencies throughout the Revenue Cycle
Regular engagement with VUMC office of Compliance/Privacy to ensure health information management meets the requirements of state, federal, and professional regulations.
Ensures education and policies are in place to protect health information and to promote the efficient and accurate coding and billing of services. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
Maintains a constant presence for HIM staff by attending and periodically presenting during team meetings.
Recruits, interviews, promotes, trains, disciplines, and terminates staff.
Sets performance standards, goals for direct reports and the department.
Evaluates and counsels' staff on their performance. Provides development opportunities for staff growth. Creates team environment and engagement strategies for largely remote workforce.
Maintains appropriate medical records and statistics for prospective payment systems to ensure compliance with TJC, CMS and other applicable regulations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management and 10 years' experience.
Master's Degree in Business or Health Information Management.
RHIA or RHIT Certification as well as any other related certifications.
Experience working for an Academic Medical Center and or a Multi Hospital System.
Executive leadership Experience.
Knowledge on clinical documentation.
