About the Baystate Medical Center Midwifery Education Program
The purpose of the Program is to prepare competent midwives committed to providing equitable care with a particular emphasis on meeting the health care needs of diverse populations; and who will promote health equity through practice and involvement in community and professional activities.
Founded in 1991, The Baystate Medical Center Midwifery Education Program is one of older programs in the country and one of only two programs located in an academic medical center. This education model affords the Program Director a unique role that combines midwifery education with clinical practice and supports both the roles of educator and clinician. Funding through Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services funding keeps tuition low, supporting access to diverse students.
The program resides within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and enjoys extensive support of the largest medical center in Western Massachusetts. CNMs are full members of the medical staff of Baystate Medical Center. CNMs in Massachusetts are recognized as independent practitioners with no supervisory language in statute.
Baystate Midwifery Education Program Academic Leadership:
- Lead the region’s only ACME-accredited Midwifery Education Program, providing education to 7 students/year in a five semester, certificate program. Students earn a master’s degree through an articulation with Thomas Jefferson University .
- Oversee program function and quality in accordance with Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education criteria, including the areas of administration, faculty, students, curriculum , facilities, and evaluation
- Provide faculty development and supervision to 14 CNMs in combined faculty and clinical practice
- Faculty appointment with University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and Baystate Midwifery and Women’s Health.

Baystate Midwifery and Women’s Health
- Combine a faculty role in the Midwifery Education Program with full scope clinical care with Baystate Midwifery and Women’s Health.
- Our midwifery-led, full-scope, independent practice conducts over 500 births a year at Baystate Medical Center (BMC), BMC is a Level 3 Perinatal Center, and the Obstetric Service conducts approximately 4,300 births a year.
- Ambulatory care occurs in 7 outpatient sites, including two neighborhood health centers, a FQHC, and an area women’s correctional facility. Student precepting occurs in all sites.

Qualifications: ACNM Board Certified Nurse Midwife with 10+ years’ experience with evidence of progressive
Faculty/teaching responsibilities and leadership in an academic setting. Demonstrable record of collaboration, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, enthusiasm for education and mentoring. The Departments of Midwifery greatly values teamwork, collegiality, diversity, equity, and inclusion and community engagement. Leadership training is provided and encouraged. Ph.D./DNP/DM Preferred. Bilingual candidates encouraged to apply.
