Job Summary:
This position has two primary purposes: to conduct programs of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) under the standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral (ACPE) and to meet the pastoral care needs of the assigned clinical areas or entities within Mary Washington Healthcare. The clinical component of this assignment includes providing pastoral services and on-call coverage, as well as providing religious and spiritual services and functions as appropriate. As an ACPE Certified Educator, the incumbent will develop curriculum, supervise students' clinical work, provide educational opportunities and evaluate student educational experiences. The incumbent works in coordination with other pastoral care providers at Mary Washington Healthcare.Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Conducts programs of CPE training according to ACPE standards.
- Participates in the planning and administration of the overall training program, including the Accreditation of the CPE program.
- Designs curriculum for student-centered learning.
- Conducts admissions interviews, communicates admission decisions, and handles application materials.
- Assigns, reviews, and comments on students' written materials.
- Evaluates the students' personal and professional functioning, writes an evaluative report in accord with ACPE Standards, and completes ACPE registration forms for students who complete the program.
- Oversees/provides in-service education related to pastoral care, religious and spiritual programs in order to increase staff understanding, skills and knowledge.
- Collaborates with the institution's Director of Pastoral Care to provide pastoral care coverage and participates in other pastoral care programs as assigned.
- Works with administrative staff of assigned entities to evaluate the spiritual needs and provides appropriate pastoral care.
- Provides on-call coverage as appropriate to the health system entities.
- Participates in team meetings and rounds and serves on institutional committees as appointed.
- Provides religious, spiritual and educational activities within the assigned entities to most effectively serve patients, utilize staff and provide comprehensive pastoral care.
- Participates as a System representative in appropriate community outreach activities.
- Works with community clergy to facilitate pastoral care in MWHC.
- Promotes an interdisciplinary approach to pastoral care among all chaplains.
- Maintains reporting relationships and accountability as assigned and agreed within the Pastoral Care Department and with entity mangers for written and verbal reporting, as well as in person and staff meetings.
- Assists in the coordination of clergy and pastoral visitors from the religious community.
- Keeps records of pastoral activity to communicate with the other members of the department and reports to the department/institution.
- Participates in the department's plan for continuous quality improvement.
- Contributes to the wider community through publication, teaching, research.
- Authors or co-authors materials relevant to spiritual care and pastoral education.
- Participates in teaching/lecturing on a periodic basis as invited.
- Participates in programs and administrative activities of the institution.
- Participates in regular professional development activities and supervision.
- WORKING CONDITIONS
- Some direct contact with patients with communicable diseases using accepted universal precautions.
- Substantial time spent with students, staff, patients, and their loved ones requiring a high degree of emotional energy and mental alertness.
- Must have mobility through the institution's facilities which are handicapped accessible.
- Must have ability to handle student stress associated with the intense educational experience and to handle stress associated with providing ministry to patients and their loved ones who experience pain, suffering, death, and grief.
Qualifications:
- Certified Educator or Associate Certified Educator by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), Inc. and remain in good standing with that organization required.
- This certification requires:
- A college degree
- A master's level theological degree or equivalent
- Several years of clinical training in chaplaincy and chaplaincy supervision
- Ordination or commissioning for ministry by a recognized religious group
- A current endorsement for chaplaincy by a recognized religious group
- Appearance before a national certifying commission for assessment of competency
- Board Certified Chaplain by one of the following preferred: Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or Neshama Association of Jewish Chaplains.
