The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing Service) position is located in the Sterile Processing Service at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Augusta, GA. The Supervisory MST performs supervisory duties requiring in-depth knowledge of equipment, decontamination, high-level disinfection and sterilization. The Incumbent will perform and supervise Decontamination, Preparation/Processing and Assembly, Operating Room and Sterile Storage, GI Scope Reprocessing and HLD. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English. Experience and/or Education. Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR Education. One-year-above-high-school-that included-at-least-6 semester-hours-in-health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification. None. Grade Requirements: Creditable Experience 1. Knowledge of Current MST Practices. To be creditable, the experience must have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) associated with MST responsibilities. Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as a MST. 2. Quality of Experience. Qualifying experience must be at a level comparable to MST experience at the next lower grade level of the position being filled. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. 3. Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a MST is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a MST employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service. Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed. Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues. (c) Assignment. The Supervisory MST functions as a first-level supervisor responsible for the oversight of a group of MSTs, with administrative responsibility for planning and directing the work. Oversees attendance and leave, including approval of sick and annual leave and vacation schedules. Informs higher level management of anticipated vacancies or increases in workload. Recommends promotions, reassignments, recognition of superior performance, retention or release of probationary employees or other changes of assigned personnel. Holds corrective interviews with employees, referring disciplinary problems to higher levels of management. Resolves informal complaints of employees and deals with union representatives on personnel matters. Provides technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the organizational unit. Preferred Experience: Current sterile processing certification by a nationally recognized certifying body. Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). Ensures national sterile processing standards are adhered to by staff in the process of cleaning/decontamination, sterilization, reprocessing, and distribution. Assures staff is competent for reprocessing critical and critical RME. Oversees the collection, receipt and decontamination of all critical and semi­-critical RME. Manages the meticulous inspection, assembly, packaging and terminal sterilization of all medical, dental and surgical instrumentation, implantable devices and instruments used throughout the Health Care System. Manages the proper storage, transport and delivery of sterile instrumentation and environmental factors that may impact sterility. Manages the complete reprocessing of endoscopes for all areas of responsibility to include: Gastroenterology (GI) clinic, Pulmonary area, Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT)) area, as well as the Operating Room. Oversees the high-level disinfection of devices requiring low temperature reprocessing. Assures quality tests arc performed and strict adherence to standards is carried out. Collaborates with other services within the Medical Center to address areas of concern, plans work, sets and adjusts short-term priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work, ensures that work priority and sequences, procedures, methods and deadlines have been met for the cleaning, reprocessing and distribution of critical and semi critical reusable medical equipment (RME) and surgical instrumentations. Participates in Quality Assurance programs ensuring product quality assurance through random sampling, biological testing, and product assessment. Reviews the Temperature and Humidity and air flow to ensure that they arc maintained as required per Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policy and directives. Participates as a member of, or in an advisory capacity on committees such as the RME Committee, Infection Control and Environment of Care. Assigns work with standing instructions on objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and provides guidance for unusually involved situations. Supervises assigned employees. Evaluates the performance of the employee using counseling techniques, the mid-point and annual appraisals. Gives advice and instruction to subordinates on work or administrative matters, as required. Hears and investigates employee grievances. Resolves issues and make recommendations for disciplinary action(s) if necessary. Approves or disapproves requests for leave from subordinates. Recommends section employees for awards when warranted. Works as the lead team member with other Medical Supply Technicians of various experience to carry out the daily work utilizing the written standard operating procedures and/or manufactures written instructions in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted/standard practices.
