Responsible for accurate coding of outpatient records. Codes referred outpatient, ERs and ASU records using ICD 10 diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes. Assists with abstracting when needed.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge and accurately assigns proper ICD 10 diagnosis codes to all referred outpatient records. (i.e. Radiology, Cardiology, Clinics)
- Demonstrates knowledge and accurately assigns proper ICD 10 diagnosis and procedure codes and CPT codes to Emergency Department Records.
- Demonstrates knowledge and accurately assigns proper ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes and CPTcodes to outpatient procedure records. ( ASU, Outpatient Medical)
- Reviews and/or completes Emergency Departmentcharge sheet. Assigns appropriate Evaluation and Management level based on documentation and identifies chargeable items.
- Abstracts data from coded records into various computer programs as needed.
- Demonstrate the ability to utilize computer systems for maximum efficiency. Knowledgeable about menus and reports available through Paragon system. (Medical Record, Patient Accounting applications). Demonstrate ability to utilize various computer software programs.
- Performing other duties as requested or as needed to support the coding area.
- Demonstrate ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities. Maximize use of time.
Education:
- Minimum - High School or Equivalent.
- Preferred - Associate`s Degree in Medical Records Technology, Nursing, or other related field.
Experience:
- Required - 2 or more years working in a Medical Records Department, Physician`s Office, or similar health care experience.
Training/License:
- Required - Medical Terminology and Coding courses. Preferred - Advanced Medical Terminology and Anatomy/Physiology. Knowledge of automated coding/abstracting systems.
Other: - Required - Working knowledge of computer systems especially PCs and networked environments. Ability to interact with all levels of hospital personnel especially the medical staff. Basic administrative skills (filing, data entry, answering telephone).
- Preferred - Must be able to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
