The VUMC CHTN Biorepository works closely with patients and medical teams to procure and obtain remnant biological specimens from autopsies and surgeries. The main function of the biorepository is to consent, procure, and distribute biospecimens under NCI and ISBER Best Practices. Staff will be required to rotate through four operational areas every 6months until fully trained. Candidates will be placed in one of four operational areas listed below based on their educational background, work history, and the immediate needs of the biorepository.

Biorepository Coordinator II:
Area 1: Consent. The position will require staff to approach patients for participation in research protocols, obtain consent and biofluids for CHTN project and internal investigator-driven protocols. Staff will be required to communicate with internal investigators, obtain new/current consent forms and assist with IRB continuing review/accrual numbers for internal studies.
Consent staff will be required to maintain accurate records and report consent numbers, quarterly to the VICC. Level 2 staff will be required to monitor level 1 staff, secondary check records, and work and ensure compliance with training materials. Level 2 staff will be required to complete Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification and/or the CTRNET Biorepository Course.
Staff will communicate closely with the procurement technicians to ensure that investigators' requests are fully met based on the research criteria. Staff will work towards completing competencies in Anatomy and Physiology and Disease Progression in the following anatomic sites: Prostate, Kidney, and Bladder or other anatomic sites. Staff will work towards proficiencies in staging and grading cancer per CAP protocols.
Area 2: Procurement. The position will require staff to work closely with the surgical team and surgical pathology suite to obtain biospecimens from consented donors per the investigator's requirement. Staff will be required to communicate with internal and external investigators to ensure that biospecimens meet the collection criteria. Communication with the consent team and shipping personnel is required to ensure that specimens are handled according to Best Practices. Level 2 staff will monitor level 1 staff and ensure that Good Laboratory Practices, sterile technique, and procurement protocols are being followed. Level 2 staff will be required to review EPIC surgery schedules and identify potential donors for tissue collection. Level 2 staff will be required to review the patient's medical chart to ensure that the donors meet inclusion criteria for collection based on the investigator's requirements. Level 2 staff will work towards obtaining Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification or CTRNET Biorepository certification. Level 2 staff will work towards completing competencies in Disease progression, cancer staging, and grading and treatment. Staff will work towards completing competencies in Anatomy and Physiology and Disease Progression in the following anatomic sites: Prostate, Kidney, and Bladder or other anatomic sites.
Area 3. QAQC. The position will require staff to work closely with the lab manager and other lead team members to record de-identified patient data and perform follow-up chart reviews for investigators. The position will require staff to gain proficiency in writing use cases or user stories for database improvements. Staff will be required to work closely with the program director and IT personnel in the development of new features, beta testing, and bug testing the final product. Staff should have a good understanding of EPIC and how to extract data from patients' charts, cancer staging, and grading and data entry best practices. Staff will be required to train junior members on data entry of biospecimens QAQC. Staff must work towards certification in CTRNET Biorepository course or Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification.
Staff will work closely with all CHTN team members on error reporting and reconciliation as well as workflow improvements to reduce human error. Staff will work towards completing competencies in Anatomy and Physiology and Disease Progression in the following anatomic sites: Prostate, Kidney, and Bladder or other anatomic sites.
Area 4: Shipping. Staff will be responsible for communicating with internal and external investigators to schedule shipments and update the IT Biorepository and ancillary systems (courier) to ensure that biospecimens are shipped according to Best Practices and Federal Guidelines. Staff will be responsible for updating tissue requests and other investigator information in the IT Biorepository system.
Level 2 staff will work closely with the CHTN Histology Department to ensure HE stained slides are digitally scanned and loaded on the IT Biorepository system and accessible by the investigator. Level 2 staff will be responsible for inventory management and ensuring that consumables are available for operations. Level 2 staff will work closely with the Lab Technicians to ensure FFPE inventory is properly maintained and managed for easy access and identifying FFPE blocks.
Level 2 staff will work towards obtaining Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification or CTRNET Biorepository certification. Level 2 staff will work towards completing competencies in Disease progression, cancer staging, and grading and treatment. Staff will work towards completing competencies in Anatomy and Physiology and Disease Progression in the following anatomic sites: Prostate, Kidney, and Bladder or other anatomic sites.
