JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) and working closely with leadership, the SVP Chief Risk Officer (CRO) is responsible for supporting the CLO and leading multiple functions including Enterprise Risk Management for the BSWH system. The SVP CRO has extensive healthcare legal and risk management expertise to lead in the development and maintaining of an Enterprise Risk Management strategy and framework for BSWH. The SVP CRO provides legal advice for transaction risks, claims, litigation, investigations, and inquiries involving the system. The SVP CRO manages and directs the insurance and captive program, collaboratively works with stakeholders to identify, and mitigate risks. The SVP CRO will provide oversight of multiple general counsels to serve as a partner and support to our teams in this leadership role for BSWH.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Collaborate and partner to review claims and suits for the system by serving to identify trends, risk mitigation efforts for claims and suits against a BSWH entity or by a BSWH entity to include evaluating cases, reserves, strategy, debriefing, lessons learned and improvements.
- Advise senior management with timely, transparent, and effective communication on significant events, trends and issues of litigation, complaints, property issues, credentialing and peer review risks, and other enterprise risks facing the system. Provide legal and risk management advice on a broad range of matters in compliance with federal and state laws.
- Lead BSWH strategic enterprise risk management initiatives and manage all types of risks through enterprise risk management to support the achievement of the system's strategic and long-¬term goals, including collaboration with Legal, Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit, and key risk owners.
- Oversee and progressively enhance risk management programs in the BSWH Enterprise Risk Management framework pertaining to enterprise risks, risk management education, incident reporting, potentially compensable events, to minimize risk exposure for the system and to prevent harm. Responsible for providing risk strategic analytics, and the development and monitoring of key risk indicators for the system.
- Provide presentations to the board, senior leaders, and stakeholders on enterprise risk management, zero preventable harm, and other key areas. Lead and participate in strategic, quality, safety, and related committees to support enterprise risk management.
- Collaborate and partner with Compliance, Accreditation, HR, Marketing, Social Command Center, Cyber/IT Security, Pharmacy, Clinical Leaders, Operational Leaders, and other stakeholders to identify emerging risks and needs identified to develop a strategy to meet those needs and mitigate risks while supporting staff in developing or modifying practices and procedures to conform, with the legal requirements, regulatory standards and reduce risk.
- As requested, represent BSWH by participating in industry, business, and professional organizations.
- Performs other position appropriate duties as required in a competent, professional, and courteous manner.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Strong leadership skills with a team-oriented and collaborative approach
- Experience representing hospitals, healthcare systems or physician groups is strongly preferred
- At least 10+ years of legal and risk management experience gained through a combination of law firm and in-house experience with ability to efficiently manage in-house attorneys and risk management department by adeptly assessing talent and managing workflow processes
- Effective in managing the activities of a team and working well with diverse personalities
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
- Ability to develop trust and collaborative relationships
- CPHRM preferred
- Admission to the Texas BarMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Juris Doctor
