General Description of the Job Class
Supporting the people and organizational priorities of Duke Health, the visual storyteller plays a critical role in telling our Duke Health story and deepening engagement with our mission, vision and values through compelling television, video, photography, and web content. Reporting to the Director of Brand Communications, the visual storyteller focuses on telling the human stories of our people, sharing their aspirations, challenges, and impact through documentary storytelling. To support organizational goals and initiatives, the visual storyteller curates, shoots, produces and edits content as an individual creative artist, as well as within a team setting in conjunction with other internal creatives as well as external creative partners. The visual storyteller is a well-connected, people- and mission-oriented individual who is passionate about our employees, our patients and their families, and the community we serve.
Key areas of accountability include storyboarding, cinematography & camera operation, audio recording, video editing, web publishing, design, color correction, motion graphics, selecting soundtracks, researching stock imagery, troubleshooting technical issues, sound design, distribution of video deliverables, and proper acquisition and storage of legal documentation and other functions of the post-production process.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
- Visual Storytelling Pre-Production
- Discuss, conceive, write and storyboard Duke Health's most impactful story ideas alongside the marketing and communications teams as well as DUHS providers, staff, patients, leaders and administrators to develop a cohesive vision and strategy for an effective final product.
- Visual Storytelling Production
- Direct and capture compelling visual stories from around the Duke University Health System through the utilization of creative video and photo techniques that yield high quality, engaging content for our Duke Health marketing and communications platforms.
- Visual Storytelling Post-Production
- Edit and deliver engaging video and photo content that connects with our audiences (both internal and external) and spotlights our key mission areas of Our People & Environment, Patient Care, Research & Technology, Education, Community Health, and Global Health.
- Production Schedule Management
- Plan, schedule, and maintain an evolving shooting & editing calendar that includes a detailed account of your projects and their timelines.
- Photo & Video Equipment Management
- Work to maintain and organize the production equipment by tracking the equipment inventory's usage and cleanliness, as well as monitoring advances in the video production landscape to suggest investments in new technology.
- Marketing Management
- Develop, plan and implement promotional programs and tactics as defined in project specific marketing plans to meet the business objectives of the department/services the marketing plans support.
- Maintain a high awareness of the market dynamics and service competition within areas of specific marketing responsibility in order to nimbly recommend plan course corrections, seize emerging opportunities or defend against competitor activity.
- Maintain and demonstrate a high level of understanding of the services offered in assigned department/services, and how they are differentiated from competition.
- Provide written and creative direction support, where needed, in the development of collateral materials as identified in marketing plans. Work directly with designers and other creative staff to develop materials that optimally achieve the objectives of the business.
- Write key messages, value propositions, plan summaries, results summaries, and other marketing communications materials that are central to marketing operations.
- Work as a part of a collaborative team to maximize support for assigned marketing projects.
- Keep business partners regularly informed of progress related to planned initiatives and collateral material development.

Preferred Qualifications at this Level
- Second language proficiency
Education: Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelors in Fine Arts (BFA) in journalism, communications, video production or related field. An
Master of Arts (MA) or a Master of Fine Art (MFA) or commensurate experience in health care or community-based organizations is preferred.
Experience: 5+ years of experience in visual journalism or brand storytelling with a focus on documentary video, photography and editing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- A strong portfolio of visual storytelling on a variety of platforms
- Experience in documentary storytelling, non-linear editing, and content management systems
- Ability to generate creative, engaging, content-driven visuals and films
- Ability to edit within the Adobe Creative Suite utilizing Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, and Adobe Audition.
- Familiarity with Da Vinci Resolve for coloring footage.
- Demonstrated news judgment, photography experience, and non-linear editing skills
- Flexible with schedule, reliable and dependable
- Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism and/or documentary photography and filmmaking
- Analytical skills to manage organizational needs, solve complex problems, conduct research, come up with creative ideas and communication tactics, and conceptualize realistic and effective messaging goals.
- Ability to work quickly and under pressure, including outside of ordinary business hours.
- A proactive and innovative mindset for finding unique opportunities to communicate with key audiences, reinforce key messages, and address employee needs.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Bachelor's degree in business administration, healthcare administration, marketing, communications or a related field in required.
Experience
Four years of related experience in marketing, marketing communication, or communications, with demonstrated experience in driving the implementation of strategic marketing plans and tactics.
Work experience should include participation in strategic plan development and expertise in tactics that range from collateral material creation and development, to special event management, to highly targeted, audience-specific initiatives.
