The Department of Occupational Therapy has been part of the College of Health Sciences since the Department's inception 40 years ago. The chairperson facilitates and leads the academic and research activities for this innovative entry-level doctoral program. The chairperson serves as the embodiment of the department within the larger institution, and national and international professional communities to realize its defined mission. The chairperson collaborates with the occupational therapy clinical director and community partners to assure the ongoing academic-clinical partnership, highlighting the department's commitment to occupation-based practice across the medical-community-based continuum, which is at the core of our mission, vision, and educational philosophy. The uniqueness of this partnership has been recognized nationally and helped the program increase in rankings from 40th to 23rd in the U.S. News and World Report rankings. The chairperson is given adequate release time to assure the administrative needs of the program are being met.
Job Standards
- Supports the mission, vision, goals and strategic objectives of the college, university and medical center.
- Provides leadership for the development and implementation of the vision, mission and strategic plan of the department's educational programs and patient care services.
- Ensures the quality of the educational program(s) offered within the department as demonstrated by program outcomes and rankings (where available).
- Ensures the quality of clinical and support activities provided by the department, as applicable.
- Develops and maintains an effective research program within the department.
- Maintains financial integrity of the department.
- Supports professional, community and continuing education service activities within the department.
- Provides for faculty and staff development and a positive and productive work environment.
- Promotes diversity within the department, college, university and medical center.
Qualifications
- Earned doctorate and associated credentials in a field appropriate to providing academic leadership for the department.
- Demonstrated abilities in teaching, research and scholarship, student advisement, committee service, management, and administration.
- Active in professional associations; demonstrated leadership role in organizations or societies external to Rush University related to the profession.
- Knowledge of clinical practice and management in an academic medical institution, experience in practice (preferred).
- A minimum of 8 years of occupational therapy experience, including at least 5 years of a full-time academic appointment with teaching responsibilities at the postsecondary level.
- Certification by NBCOT as an OTR to act as an occupational therapist
- State of Illinois license required or application in process
