Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) oversees the clinical and business operations of Medical Associates, Iowa's oldest physician-owned multi-specialty group practice, delivering care across 33 specialties in 12 Iowa-Illinois-Wisconsin locations.
While not a direct responsibility, it is worth noting that Medical Associates Health Plans was established in 1982 by Medical Associates Clinic, the Tri-State area’s first health maintenance organization.
As a member of a six-person executive team leading strategic direction, this role is instrumental in the management and growth of a uniquely positioned medical group recognized as the premier regional physician enterprise. The COO is responsible for leading the departmental and regional operations, as well as ancillary services, providing operational expertise across the group. This individual will assist its fellow administrative leadership and physician shareholders in driving innovation and making sound business decisions. Medical Associates Clinic is a well-established physician group practice with over 170 providers and a staff of over 1,000 health care professionals and support personnel.
General Summary of Duties:
- Responsible for directing, supervising and coordinating daily activities of various clinic departments in accordance with Medial Associates Clinic's mission and values
- Supervision Received: Reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer
- Supervision Exercised: Exercises supervision of Directors and Administration staff

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Partner with C-suite executives to develop and implement long-range plans, goals, and objectives
- Establishing the overall strategy, business and operation planning, efficiency, and market growth for the areas of responsibility including for all provider practices/clinical operations
- Provides leadership to facilities maintenance, remodeling projects, and acquisitions
- Develops strategies and initiatives to capture potential new markets and service lines
- Partners with Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to ensure that clinical operations provide safe, coordinated, and high quality care to patients
- Partners with Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to monitor and oversee the cost effectiveness of operations and ensures that all revenue and expense budgets are met
- Partners with Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) to develop and maintain a culture that encourages excellence and achieves outstanding results in patient, provider and staff
- Empowers employees at all levels to be innovative and action-oriented while advancing a culture of collaboration and accountability with clearly established lines of authority and decision-making
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Strong Business Analytical Skill Set: demonstrated history of utilizing operations data to drive decision making
- Demonstrated Strategic Business Orientation: with an understanding of the future direction of healthcare delivery and reimbursement
- Executive Leadership Influence & Collaboration: demonstrated ability to gain physician and staff support when developing, implementing, and promoting
- Continuous Improvement Mindset: successful history of redesigning practice management systems and aligning incentives
- Experience with IT systems including electronic health records (EHR) and financial and business analytics software/analysis tools. EMR conversion or implementation is ideal
- Leadership Presence and Courage: personal and professional presence to provide leadership on behalf of Medical Associates, and to make tough decisions after discernment
- Demonstrated Integrity: Cares about people, communicates openly and honestly

Education:
- Bachelor's degree required
- Master’s degree in Health Administration or Business preferred
