Reporting to the Senior Director, Facilities and Engineering, the Director, Sustainability and Energy Management will oversee the further development and execution of Tenet�s enterprise sustainability programs. Serving as the organization�s subject matter expert for sustainability, the Director will establish the programs and systems to measure, monitor, manage and minimize the organization�s environmental impact contributing to more sustainable operations. The Director will collaborate with other leaders in the organization to develop and implement the strategic vision for the enterprise sustainability program with the goal of reducing the systems resource consumption, improving our physical environment for patients, staff and visitors, while building and maintaining critical community partnerships that work to meet broad sustainability objectives. This strategy will target reductions in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, focusing on 1 and 2 while building the framework for Scope 3. The program should include multiple tactics including, but not limited to, staff training initiatives to modify wasteful behavior, industry partnership and advocacy in industry organizations including Practice Greenhealth and ASHE, the integration of sustainable practices in the design and construction of new facilities and spaces, waste reduction and recycling and energy management programs including the practical integration of renewable energy sources.
As a key leader in the Real Estate and Facility Management leadership team the Director will partner with Operators, Sourcing, Finance and Investor Relations teams, he/she will develop and implement regular sustainability reports promoting the successes and progress toward our strategic sustainability goals. The focus of this reporting will be on measurable and reportable impacts within the system, along with the community and global benefits that are generated from the program; this will be an integral component to our overall ESG reporting program.
The Director will also lead our energy management program; with a focus on reducing consumption and expense. This role includes managing the budgeting and procurement program ensuring that we effectively procure and budget for energy and utility expense annually, report on significant variances and maintain a procurement strategy that matches the organization�s risk profile. The Director will also identify and execute on enterprise level energy consumption reduction projects in partnership with the on-site facility management and operating teams.
In conjunction with the Senior Director, Facilities and Engineering, the Director, Sustainability and Energy Management will be responsible for developing, implementing and leading a high performing sustainability and energy management program that cost effectively reduces the organization�s environmental impact, improves our care environments, and strengthens our community relationships and partnerships; while measuring and reporting on the progress to leadership and key stakeholders.
Other responsibilities include the following:
- With the Senior Director, Facilities and Engineering and other key leaders in the enterprise, develop a practical, strategic sustainability and energy management plan across all sectors of the Tenet real estate portfolio with emphasis on hospital and owned medical office building portfolio.
- Develop, produce, maintain and promote the sustainability dashboard that monitors key sustainability metrics, making them visible to all critical stakeholders and fosters best practice sharing and competition to reduce waste and emissions.
- Engage as an industry thought leader while staying abreast of innovations within the sustainability and energy management fields; educate Tenet leadership keeping them apprised of key developments.
- Produces regular sustainability reports for stakeholders including, but not limited to, internal constituents, our communities and our investors as part of our regular ESG reporting program.
- Develop and deliver sustainability education programs for all key stakeholders including facilities management staff members and building occupants.
- Develop and implement a cost-effective renewable energy strategy for the enterprise.
- Working with the facility management team, develop enterprise utility consumption reduction programs and projects; ensuring appropriate resourcing and visibility to ensure completion of projects.
- Working with facility directors to ensure effective annual utility budgets are produced and maintained.
- Build and maintain effective working relationship with bill payment and energy procurement service providers, serving and single point of contact for data reporting and energy procurement contracting.
- Review large construction and capital projects to optimize the sustainability of facility designs, systems and products are incorporated into our facilities.
- Actively engage in the development of the annual infrastructure capital budgets, advocating for key projects that will have significant sustainability impacts while meeting organizational needs.
- Develops and implements waste stream monitoring programs and strategies to ensure that waste production is accurately measured and reported.
- Working with key stakeholders; including Sourcing, identify key strategies and programs to minimize waste production in normal business operations including product packaging minimization and increased recycling where cost-effective.
- Develops and implement strategies and programs to ensure waste stream optimization to reduce risk to the environment while optimizing waste removal expense.
- Working with corporate communications develop external and a communications program messaging surrounding our Sustainability Initiatives; to include key public and community engagements such as �Earth Day� participation and others.

Qualifications:CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE, ATTRIBUTES AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Significant experience leading sustainability and energy management programs, with at least 10 years of experience working with large-scale, complex organizations and systems, preferably healthcare systems.
- Strong analytic skills; particularly relating to sustainability and energy metrics
- Computer literate with strong Microsoft skills.
- Sustainability and Energy management certification is highly desirable.
- Experience in strategizing, creating and implementing a multi-year, sustainability program across multiple locations with demonstrated success in reducing emissions and energy consumption.
- Demonstrated experience developing and executing successful energy procurement strategies in deregulated markets.
- Expert level understanding of utility bill terminology; particularly around rates and tariffs to develop strategies to ensure optimal rate selection.
- Experience analyzing complex waste streams and developing optimization strategies is highly desirable.
- Strong management skills within a multifaceted and complex organization with a diverse set of perspectives.
- Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating, customer service standards, and equal opportunity and affirmative action.
- Good organization skills with the ability to prioritize workload and successfully manage all financial activities.
- A cooperative approach to problem solving with the capability of building consensus and support, working across functional lines to engage disparate resources to work together to achieve desired results.

Education/Certifications
- A Bachelor�s degree in Sustainability, Engineering or a relevant field is required.
- A Master�s degree in Business Administration or relevant Management or Engineering field is preferred.
- Sustainability related certification from GBCI or ISSP and/or energy management certification are desirable.
