The Safety Officer position within Vanderbilt Environmental Health and Safety provides direct customer support to Vanderbilt University Medical Center hospitals and associated clinics. This position will directly work with the Assistant Director and other section staff to assist the facility in maintaining compliance with the standards promulgated by the Joint Commission, CAP, OSHA/TOSHA, TDEC, EPA and other applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies

Department Summary:Vanderbilt Environmental Health & Safety (VEHS ) provides a full range of safety, environmental and sustainability services to support the teaching, research, service and patient care missions for Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Additional Key Elements/ Responsibilities:- Assists with responsibility for the overall fire/safety plan in the hospitals and clinics. Assists with fire drills and emergency preparedness drills within the VUMC hospitals and clinics.
- Assists in the implementation of hazardous materials monitoring programs: environmental and personal monitoring and reporting/documentation of results.
- Performs Indoor Air Quality evaluations using standard assessment tools, reporting results to applicable manager
- Assists with the Airborne Hazards Respiratory Protection Program, providing respirator fit testing and training for Workforce Members
- Conducts safety audits for the hospitals and associated clinics. Reports results of audits to the department managers with recommendations for correction. Documents and maintains audit records for the Medical Center Safety Committee and regulatory agencies.
- Assists in the development and implementation of safety policies/procedures, safety education, and hazard surveillance programs for Vanderbilt Medical Center and associated clinics.
- Works collaboratively with other VUMC groups and contractors to provide a safe environment during construction activities
- Participates on various Medical Center-associated committees, subcommittees and task forces by appointment; provides recommendations and assists with corrective actions.
- Works collaboratively with other VEHS staff, Facilities Management, Environmental Services and other key departments to assist the hospitals and clinics in meeting federal, state and local requirements, Joint Commission and OSHA standards.
- Provides technical assistance and support to various hospital departments in the development, review, and evaluation of departmental-level safety programs.
- Presents fire safety and departmentally specific safety information and training for new employees and re-training for current employees as required.
- Participates in Emergency Preparedness and response activities to include training activities, drills and plan activation
- Carries the VEHS 24-hr emergency pager in a rotation that includes all exempt staff for on-campus emergencies.
- Performs other duties relevant to the Hospital/ Clinic Safety Section as assigned.
- Communication : Frequent contact with all levels of administration, faculty, staff, students, visitors and patients including the presentation of information where detailed explanation is required to obtain cooperation . Frequent contact with consultants and vendors.
