The Associate Vice President for Research Regulations oversees all university medical center-wide research administration-related activities. Responsible for developing and implementing service-oriented processes and a robust infrastructure in support of UTMB’s rapidly expanding research programs. Responsibilities include assuring that a comprehensive research infrastructure is in place that will strengthen and streamline all key regulatory areas that support individual researchers, departments, and Schools. The AVP for Research Regulations also develops and sustains a balance between a high level of client service with research faculty with an unusually high level of operational efficiency while fostering a culture of informed, self-directed compliance with institutional, federal and sponsor regulations.
The Associate Vice President for Research Regulations must minimally possess a Master’s degree in business, healthcare, or related field. Equivalent experience and 8 years of experience in the oversight and leadership of research operations within a large, complex academic medical center is also acceptable.
Core Competencies and Leadership Qualifications:
Breadth and depth of knowledge of management principles, excellent organizational and management skills and the ability to analytically organize and present data and information for senior administration.
Sound knowledge of research administration and relevant trends, including federal and other sponsor regulation governing grant and contract administration.
Sound knowledge of 2CFR200 and other sponsor regulations.
Proven track record of engendering confidence and working effectively at all levels of an organization.
Ability to develop, implement, and maintain major initiatives within a highly complex academic and research environment.
Essential Job Functions:
Develop and implement policies, procedures and systems that assure the integrity of the institution.
Monitor and respond to regulatory changes in the research environment.
Develop and monitor the annual fiscal year budget for Research Regulations.
Oversee the recruitment, retention, and development of Research staff to maintain a well-trained staff.
Establish a strong customer-focused approach to researchers that balances proactive outreach, responsiveness and sound fiscal management.
Function as an advocate for UTMB’s research program.
Lead/Co-lead or serve as a member on institutional research committees.
Reports To: Executive Vice President and Provost.
Income Package: A negotiable starting salary is based upon experience and educational background between $200,000 and $300,000 with potential incentives of up to 15%. UTMB also offers a superior benefits package, an excellent retirement program and a relocation allowance.
