JOB DESCRIPTION FOR PRESIDENT AND CEO
This job description provides everyday guidance for the President and CEO. It will be revisited and revised as the job and the organization’s needs change.
President and CEO
The President and CEO is the Chief Executive Officer of the Kansas Health Care Association, and as such represents membership to regulators, state and national officials and the public at large. The President and CEO reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.
He or she serves as a primary advocate by articulating the membership’s strategic direction, maintaining the integrity of its culture, and seeking excellence in its members’ performance. Based on a shared understanding of the global long-term care environment, the President and CEO encourages and guides KHCA, and has a passionate desire to serve the highest interests of the population served by the membership.
The President and CEO is responsible for maintaining and strengthening member relationships, working with regulatory authorities, the Kansas legislature, and other national senior care contacts such as the National Centers for Assisted Living, the American Health Care Association, and other national and state affiliates. The Association recognizes the critical role in building and nurturing relationships with key groups for the purpose of improving the delivery of quality care as well as strategically positioning the continuum of senior care throughout the State of Kansas.
In program development and administration, the President and CEO will assure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, moves forward with KHCA’s Strategic Direction and works toward consistent and timely progress in the field of senior care.
- Provide leadership in developing programs, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff. Carries out plans and policies authorized by the Board.
- Provide necessary leadership, growth and develop learning opportunities for serving Skilled Nursing Facilities, Assisted Living, Independent Living and other senior services.
- Maintain official records, documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
- Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of senior care.
In communications and advocacy, the President and CEO will effectively communicate within the association at all times and externally on its behalf. The President and CEO must be a state and national voice for positive change in the senior care field. He or she will:
- Maintain an open relationship with, take direction from, and work with the Board of Directors and Association members. See that the board is kept informed on issues from a variety of sources, analyze that information and make recommendations to the Board of Directors for actions related to it.
- Plan, organize and effectively present ideas and concepts to the membership, interest groups and political leaders at all levels.
- Ability and interest to work effectively within Kansas politics on provider issues and reimbursement programs. Must be comfortable in state and national settings. Has the ability to interact with the media effectively always focusing on issues and the positive results of the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.
In relations with staff and the volunteer board, the President and CEO will foster a climate that ensures open communication and the development of processes and systems’ enabling the Association to refine its purpose, especially as service intersects with care delivery. This will be accomplished by:
- Possessing strong and effective Management and Leadership skills through responsible recruitment, training, and retention of all personnel. Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.
- Ensures that job descriptions are developed, performance evaluations are conducted, and sound human resource practices are in place.
- Encourages staff and board development through education.
- Promote active and broad participation by all members in appropriate areas of the organization’s work.
In budget and finance, the President and CEO will provide effective services and fiduciary management through:
- Responsible development and maintenance of sound financial practices.
- Working with the staff, Finance Committee, and the board in preparing an annual budget. Ensures that the organization operates within budget guidelines, assuring that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.
- Maintain easily understood financial records and submit to the Board of Directors and Treasurer on a monthly basis.
Qualifications
The President and CEO must possess a strong and effective management and leadership skills as well as the desire for achieving excellence. The President and CEO needs to have demonstrated a history of successful years of leadership experience with ability in organizational development and in achieving successful operational and financial results.
A Bachelor’s Degree, or higher, from an accredited college or University, or its equivalent through work experience specifically in the senior care environment is expected.
